Making 150 Count (posted Dec. 16, 2016)
The Carman Collegiate Youth in Philanthropy group with the RBC are participating in the Making 150 Count program. In celebration of Canada’s 150 Birthday in 2017, RBC is inspiring young Canadians across the country to make a difference in their communities. RBC is providing the opportunity for enthusiastic youth who are passionate about their community to make a difference by giving $150.00 for projects within their community.

The Youth in Philanthropy would like to thank Vanderveens’ Greenhouses Ltd. for their donation of beautiful poinsettias. On December 12, the Youth in Philanthropy group delivered poinsettias and spent the morning with the seniors at the Boyne Lodge, enjoying games, a snack of Scottish shortbread and beverages.

The Youth in Philanthropy group are energetic young people, who are involved in giving back to the community through fund raising events in the community such as the Family Movie Nights at the Carman Collegiate and Community Theatre, and barbeques to mention a few. The 2016-2017 Youth in Philanthropy group consists of twenty-two active volunteers with Donna Pritchard as the advisor.

Raising Children in a Digital Age (posted Sept. 16, 2016)
With Dr. Deborah MacNamara
NEUFELD INSTITUTE
Manitoba Chapter presents
The digital world is here to stay, changing our society in a way that has far-reaching consequences for our children. What are the implications for raising children? How do we harness the spectacular connecting potential and yet avoid the pitfalls of attachment technology gone awry? How do we prepare them to live in this new world and yet preserve what is required for healthy development to take place? We have followed our children into the digital world and yet for their sakes as well as ours, need to restore our lead in order to avoid the insidious dangers that live in the shadows of this potent technology. We will consider the digital revolution through the lens of developmental science, committed to helping adults help children reach their full human potential.

Smart Giving Awareness Week - (posted Nov. 20, 2015)
The Carman Area Foundation Board is promoting Smart Giving Awareness Week' from November 22nd to 28th.  The event was initiated a few years ago by local charitable organizations with the purpose to promote planned giving.  This will be the fourth year.  The Carman Area Foundation Board believes it is important to keep promoting this message, and ensure the awareness week is publicized.
The essential message of the Awareness Week is to encourage citizens to develop a giving plan that takes full advantage of tax rules, methods of giving, and charity exemptions to capture the maximum benefit for themselves and the charity of their choice.  We hope people will seek to learn more, to talk to professional advisors, and become more aware of the many local charities that would benefit from their giving.

Blood Donations - (posted Nov. 20, 2015)
What a fantastic turnout at the November 9 clinic. Carman and area exceeded  collection and attendance targets, collecting 131 units on the goal of 120. That’s amazing! Looking at previous clinics, yesterday’s clinic was the best collections vs. collection goals since April 2013.
Working together to raise awareness of the community clinic is working and the 131 units collected will go directly to help over 400 hospital patients. The next clinic is Monday, January 11, 2016 from 2-7 PM and our host partner will be the Carman Co-op.

Smart Eating Makes the Grade "Food Allergies" - (posted Sept. 18, 2015)

What is an allergic reaction?
It is when the body reacts to a protein or irritant (allergen). It can start as a mild reaction and develop into a severe reaction in seconds. The reaction may be caused by food, insect stings, environment, and medications.  Food allergies are triggered when your body's immune system mistakenly identifies a food protein to be harmful. Exposure to even the smallest amounts of allergenic protein can cause a serious allergic reaction in sensitive individuals. This is why you need to be very careful when packing school lunches for your children.
(Health Canada 2012)

What is cross-contamination (also known as cross-contact)
These terms are used to describe the presence of an allergen that is transferred from one food or object to another. For example, cookies baked on the same tray as peanut butter cookies cause a risk of cross contamination to someone with peanut allergy.

Substitutes for School Lunches and Snacks
It is important to check with your student`s classroom for a safe food list. The schools are not asking students to eliminate these foods from their diet. It is just asked that these high risk foods be consumed at home.
Always read the ingredients section of the label to identify if the product is free of the allergen.
Don't pack any food with ingredients that are restricted at your school.
Remember, even trace amounts can cause a severe allergic reaction.

Check Food Labels
REFERENCE: whyriskit? Anaphylaxis Canada
http://www.whyriskit.ca/pages/en/manage/food-labelling.php

 Check one…Check two…Check three Ingredient lists are not always the easiest thing to read with such small font, two languages and often a crinkled package. Make sure to double check the label before you consume any product. Even if you have eaten it before, it is a good idea to check the label every time, in case manufacturing practices or ingredients have changed.

 Manufacturers are friendly…Call them! Unsure about a product? Get to the bottom of it! It will save you a lot of worry in the long-run knowing if you can eat something or not. Contact food manufacturers and ask if there is the potential for cross-contamination with their product and your allergens. For a list of questions to ask a manufacturer, click http://www.anaphylaxis.ca/pdf/ProductSafety.pdf

 Product Recalls Can Occur Product recalls due to undeclared allergens do happen in Canada. The CFIA (Canadian Food & Inspection Agency) monitors and alerts consumers when any of  the 10 priority allergens are not declared on a package. Stay in the loop on product recalls through Anaphylaxis
Canada’s registry.  http://www.anaphylaxis.ca/content/difference/join_registry.asp

Allergen Substitutions
Milk
 Water, Rice milk, Almond milk, pecan milk, cashew milk, brazil nut milk, walnut milk, fruit juice, fortified soy milk. NOTE: (These substitutions may be used to achieve the same taste as milk, however should not be used to replace calcium. Regular milk and fortified soy milk have the same amount of calcium, but the other substitutions do not.)
 Sour cream—4 tablespoons of starch (corn starch, rice starch, or potato starch) mixed with 3/4 cup water and 1/4 cup vinegar for each cup of sour cream required.
 Desserts that are traditionally made with milk, such as tapioca, sago or rice pudding, can be made with fruit juice instead.

Egg
 Commercial egg replacements, e.g. Ener-G Egg Replacer
 For every egg white, use 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed and 3 tbsp water. Bring to a boil. Then refrigerate. 1 tbsp of this mix = 1 egg
 2 oz Tofu = 1 egg
 1 Banana = 1 egg in cakes
 2 tbsp potato starch = 1 egg
 2 tbsp arrowroot powder = 1 egg

Wheat
 In place of wheat flour, combinations of alternate flours work better than single flour alone.
 Rye, oat and barley flour produce a better product than rice, tapioca, and other grains because they contain gluten and have more fibre.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Event - (posted Sept. 9, 2015)
Safe Communities Carman Dufferin is once again partnering with Southern Health and Carman Collegiate to host the National Suicide Prevention Awareness – Kite Flying Event on Thursday Sept. 10, at 12 noon until one o’clock at the Carman Collegiate.   The kite is the National symbol for Suicide Prevention.  Hope all of you are available on your lunch hour next Thursday to come out and fly a kite to support Suicide prevention, learn more about it, and have fun flying a kite like you did when you were a kid. It is about encouraging connectedness with others in a fun way, as well as remembering those who are or have struggled with suicide at any age.    Lets rally around the youth of our community, and come out to connect with the students and take a moment to enjoy life.  Lets show our youth that Suicide prevention is important to us all.
Please remember to invite your friends and coworkers to come out as well.  Let’s see if we can break our record of approx 30 - 40 kites in the air at one time!!!  Lets make this the biggest and best so far for Carman/Dufferin.

Pastel Workshop - (posted Feb. 20, 2015)
On February 28 from 10 am to 4 pm, GPAC is please to present Shirley Rayner's workshop on pastels.  In this one day workshop we will explore the wonderful medium of soft pastel. Soft pastels were used by some of history's great artists including Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt. You can expect to learn about the medium including the different shapes and brands that are available. We will also learn what some of the various surfaces are that pastel can be applied to.  We will learn and practice the various marks that we can make with pastel and how we might use those marks in our paintings. Once we've experimented with pastels, we will work on a small painting. You will be taken through the process of drawing a sketch, doing an underpainting, selecting a palette and working through your painting. Throughout the day, various tips will be provided on other aspects of the artmaking process including color, value, composition, etc. Come prepared for a relaxing and fun day of art making with pastels.  Cost is $50 for members and $55 for non members.  Call 204-745-6568 to register.

The Great Plains are certainly no strangers to Manitoba or to the prairies for that matter as they have played up and down every highway and byway with Gary Fjellgaard and now on their own with their delightful all Canadian show they call “Song of the Prairies”.

Enjoy a heartwarming show filled with music, merriment, and mayhem, as Saskia and Darrel deliver a fun blend of folk music, an unpredictable series of songs that change every time you see them. They delight their audience with tales about Prairie Elevator, Blue birds, War brides, Louis Riel, Patchwork Quilts, David Thompson and then surprisingly will break into Swiss yodeling, or sing in Gaelic, Spanish, Dutch, German or French.

“Great Plains”; A veteran touring act; with an easy, crowd-friendly style that instantly endears them to any audience. This is true Canadiana; prairie style, real songs drenched in Canadian culture and heritage delivered in a comfortable highly skilled set with oodles of self-poking humor.
